Library Navigation

Navigation     (1.62)
The main problem with the E100's navigation is that it's a bit slow. Each time you enter a new folder it takes about a second to load. We have a standardized timing test where we start one song playing, then browse to another. The E100 performed this test in about twice the time as our average, which is about 5 seconds. Granted, you're not going to waste years of your life waiting for the device to respond, but sluggish menu navigation has the potential to get annoying quickly.

This is the E100's library. It's basic, but basic is easy to navigate.

Sorting options     (7.25)
The E100 has a good array of sorting options. Your music is organized into the basic categories of all music, artists, albums, genres, and my playlists. You can also choose "Dir List" to look at your file structure. This is great for those who want to browse their internally and externally stored songs separately, or for those who create their own zany file hierarchy. Other than that, you can also rate your songs from one to five stars on the device, then sort based on that rating.

The E100 has a simple 5-star ratings system.

Search options     (0.13)
Some media players have interesting methods for searching through long lists of songs, such as exponentially fast scrolling, skipping to items that begin with a specific letter, or an all out search engine. The only option that the E100 has is auto scroll and, unfortunately, it's a nearly useless feature. It takes 2 seconds before the scrolling starts, and then it only skips from item to item every half second. It's faster to just hammer on the d-pad.

Playlists     (0.0)
You can't make playlists on the device. You'll have to use the included software, then sync them over.

Equalizer & Filters     (9.75)
The E100's equalizer has 7 presets and a custom equalizer function. The presets are nothing out of the ordinary: rock, pop, classic, soft, jazz, and DBB. The custom equalizer gives you access to 5 different channels, with 11 levels in each. There are also options for SRS WOW HD, which sets the levels of 3D sound effects. These 3D effects are SRS, TruBass, FOCUS, WOW, or Definition. You can set a level for each, between  1 and 10. The fade-in before a song can also be set, which is a nice little feature.
