The Archos 5 is capable of doing a lot of stuff, but doesn't support much right out of the box. You can slap on a DVR station, GPS car holder, or helmet cam, but all of these things require an additional investment. This level of expansion gives the Archos a bit of an edge over the iPod Touch, since the only upgrades for the Touch are software-based. If you want your Archos 5 to transform into a GPS-capable DVR, you can keep stacking hardware add-ons onto it like it was a Sega Genesis. The Archos 5 did all right on our audio quality tests, with a good frequency response and very little crosstalk or noise. It had a very weak output power and a lot more distortion than we usually see. Also, of course, the packed-in headphones are bad. Overall, the Archos 5 is a competent media player that has the potential to expand into a comprehensive, all-in-one device. Out of the box, however, it's a bit expensive at $350.The Archos 5 is a great option for those who want a non-Apple option, for those who want their device to grow with their changing needs, or for anyone who wants a nice big screen to watch their movies on. |
