Legions of Apple fans are drooling over a wealth of information from today's event. Fortunately for Apple, they discovered long ago that it doesn't take much to get their fans excited. Just throw some more colors out there and it's like you've released a whole new product! To be fair to Apple, they do continue to improve, if not innovate, their products. The new iPod Touch is looking slinkier than ever with its curved back and minute profile. They've added support for their Genius playlist, plus the iPod + Nike feature—though we wouldn't pick the iPod Touch as a natural jogging partner. They're also really pushing the Touch as a gaming device. Of course, no serious gamer would consider any Apple product to be a gaming device... until that unspeakable day when they announce an unholy union between Apple and Nintendo.
And there's the new, paper-thin1 iPod Nanos that are being released in nine different colors. Some additions seem like a real plus: the accelerometer to detect tilt, the Genius playlist, and the cool curved glass screen. But we're scratching our heads at the shake 'n' shuffle feature. A lot of people love their Nano as a workout companion and we don't want our iPod switching songs every time we go for a brisk run. Maybe this is a feature that works better in practice than in theory, but we remain skeptical.
Other than that, we have the usual array of Apple updates: new colors for the shuffle, fewer capacity options for the iPod classic, iTunes 8 with a nifty new visualizer, and the 2.1 iPod firmware. And, naturally, we can't let a blog post go by without commenting on Apple's iPod Touch slogan: 'The funnest iPod ever.' /groan
