The iPod Classic has the face that launched the MP3 Player industry. Years later and it has a bit of a different look, but still retains its old charm. This newest iteration comes in 80GB and 120GB models, and we've reviewed the 80GB in this very review for your reading pleasure.

The Classic is still equipped with its old scroll wheel, which, unfortunately, hasn't improved much. The control it provides is a bit spotty. If this were a cell phone, we would laud the Classic for the ability to quickly scroll through menus. On a media player, where playlists can have thousands of songs, the scroll wheel feels a bit inadequate. There is a search feature, but since you're inputting keywords with a scroll wheel and select key, inputting a query is just as tedius as scrolling to the item in the first place.

The software for playing back music and videos is great, aside from the above issue of scrolling through huge lists. The Classic, in conjunction with iTunes, also manages podcasts well. The photo album, on the other hand, is a bit lackluster.

In terms of audio quality, the iPod Classic is pretty good. It had a flat frequency response, very minimal distortion, and didn't suffer from a lot of crosstalk. It does, however, come with atrocious headphones. Providing you upgrade to a decent set of cans, the iPod Classic will be happy to oblige you with good quality music.

Overall, the iPod Classic is a good media player for its price, and provides a ton of storage space. Given all the memory, it's a shame the screen is so small, since the former is great for loading up on movies, but the latter isn't as good for enjoying them.

The iPod Classic 80GB is currently available for around $170; Apple is selling the 120GB model for $249.

Section The Good The Bad
Tour & Design Looks good, seems pretty durable, supports a lot of files.
The aesthetic is nothing new, and this thing is huge.
Hardware Good physical controls, lots of memory. Either our review unit was broken or the battery life is abysmal. Since we bought the unit off a store shelf, neither scenario is good.
Media Interface Simple, comprehensive, familiar and easy to use.
Some other media players have a few more advanced features.
Media Management Fast, easy playlists on the fly, good equalizer options.
The scroll wheel is a bit spotty and navigating lists is somewhat awkward.
Other Media Software Great podcast support. Lackluster photo album, no voice note application.
Performance Great overall audio quality.
The stock iPod headphones are garbage.
Internet & Wireless N/A: no wireless.
N/A: no wireless.
Synchronization iTunes is a great option for synchronizing, playing, or organizing your media.
iTunes also has a few annoying quirks, software is mandatory for transferring files.
Other Software Can view PIM info, has some games, good interface overall.
It's a little light in the way of extras.
